Winning the war "one listener at a time":
Winning the war "one listener at a time":
Michael Stone
Personalities deal with the public constantly whether it be on the phone, personal appearances or community involvement. Many times though, I've seen cases where the personality has complete disdain for the very people who put bread into our mouths.
Everyone has a bad day, but no matter how lame the question or how unrelated to what you're currently doing a listener comment, remember they are a LISTENER. Your bread and butter ! And every one of them should be treated with the utmost courtesy and respect.
Many times you'll be extremely busy. Explain this and most callers will understand and accept being put on hold, especially if you come back and use some of the ideas below.
I liken the phones to a drive up window. If you get bad or rude service chances are you won't be back. Not only will you not return but, you'll tell three of your friends who'll tell another three of their friends of the less than stellar service and before you know it you're losing listeners in an already highly competitive situation. There are plenty of choices! Don't give them a reason to switch the dial.
When answering the phone ask for the caller's name. This instantly puts you on a more intimate footing. Remember to many listeners you may be just a disembodied voice. You can change this in a heartbeat by giving the impression (and living up to it) that you're interested in "them". Talk with the listener not AT them. People will warm up to you very quickly if you use this approach.
It's inevitable that you'll get the disgruntled listener or someone who couldn't care less about what you do. I look at them as my challenge cases. The people that I really want to convert to a listener. Someone who pays attention when I hit the air. Be aware it doesn't always happen, but make the effort. Even if you don't get through to the caller or individual at a live appearance your attempt at communicating is worth it and good practice.
This is basic communication. Finding the tactics and strategies that will help you develop a following and eventually a network of prime listeners that will laud your talents to others.
Again, building an audience One Listener At A Time !
